Soldera (Case Basse)
The most legendary estate in Brunello di Montalcino, Soldera produces tiny quantities of Brunello from a single biodynamic vineyard, creating one of Italy's most sought after and long-lived wines.
History
Gianfranco Soldera established Case Basse in 1972 with an uncompromising vision: to produce the finest possible Brunello di Montalcino from a single estate. His perfectionism extended to the vineyard, the cellar and, most famously, to a devastating incident in 2012 when a disgruntled former employee drained around ten vintages of wine from the barrels, destroying years of irreplaceable production.
Soldera continued producing until his death in 2019, and the estate is now run by his family under the same uncompromising principles.
Style and Character
Soldera's Brunello is made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso grown on the Il Greppo vineyard, farmed biodynamically. The wine undergoes extremely long maceration and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, producing a wine of extraordinary complexity, great structure and remarkable longevity.
It is a Brunello of the classical school: fragrant, precise and demanding patience, unlike the more modern, approachable styles.
INVESTMENT NOTES
Why collectors and investors pay attention
Soldera is the blue-chip name of Italian fine wine investment, with a collector following that extends well beyond Italy. The small production, the estate's uncompromising reputation and the tragic loss of the 2012 vintages (which has made surrounding vintages rarer and more valuable) underpin exceptional and resilient demand.
