Château Mouton Rothschild

First Growth (promoted 1973)

The only estate ever promoted within the 1855 Classification, Mouton is the most opulent and flamboyant of the First Growths, as famous for its artist labels as for its wines.

History

Under Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who took control in 1922, Mouton was transformed. After decades of determined campaigning he achieved what no other estate has managed: promotion from Second to First Growth in 1973, the only revision ever made to the 1855 Classification. The estate's motto changed from "Premier ne puis, second ne daigne" to "Premier je suis".

Since 1945 Mouton has commissioned a different world famous artist to design its label each year, including Picasso, Warhol and Bacon.

Style and Character

Mouton is rich, opulent and flamboyant, with powerful cassis, cigar box and cedar aromatics and a luxurious mouthfeel. Where other First Growths can be reserved in youth, Mouton tends to be inviting and impressive from early on.

INVESTMENT NOTES

Why collectors and investors pay attention

Mouton combines First Growth status with unusually strong brand recognition, helped by its artist label series which adds a collectible dimension. The label artwork can make certain vintages especially desirable. It enjoys strong, liquid demand across the secondary market and is a core First Growth holding.

Key Wines

  • Château Mouton Rothschild (the Grand Vin)
