Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Château Lafite Rothschild

First Growth (1855)

The most aromatic and refined of the Bordeaux First Growths, Lafite is the benchmark for elegance in Pauillac and one of the most recognised names in fine wine.

History

Lafite was ranked first among the four original First Growths in the 1855 Classification, earning its enduring reputation as the first among the firsts. Its modern era began when the Ségur family acquired the estate in 1670, and in 1716 the Marquis Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur raised both its quality and its fame, becoming known as the Wine Prince.

After passing through many hands, the estate was bought by Baron James de Rothschild in August 1868 and has remained in the family for six generations. Today it is overseen by Saskia de Rothschild, daughter of Baron Eric de Rothschild, who has been involved full time since 2015.

Style and Character

Lafite is the most elegant and aromatic of the First Growths. It is defined not by power but by finesse, with classic notes of cedar, cassis, tobacco, truffle and lead pencil over pure dark fruit. In the finest vintages it requires decades to reach its peak and has remarkable staying power.

INVESTMENT NOTES

Why collectors and investors pay attention

Lafite commands more global demand and attention than any other First Growth, particularly in Asia, where the name carries exceptional brand weight. Its combination of consistent critical acclaim, limited production and deep secondary market liquidity makes it a cornerstone holding in most serious fine wine portfolios.

A single bottle of the 1869 vintage sold for over 230,000 US dollars at auction in Hong Kong in 2010.

Key Wines
