Pessac-Léognan (Graves), Bordeaux, France
Château Haut-Brion
The only First Growth outside the Médoc and the oldest of the great Bordeaux estates, Haut-Brion is a wine of remarkable consistency and a distinctive earthy, smoky signature.
History
Haut-Brion has documented wine production stretching back to 1521 and was the first Bordeaux estate to be known by name internationally, name-checked by the diarist Samuel Pepys in London in 1663. It is the only First Growth located outside the Médoc, in the Graves district on the edge of the city of Bordeaux.
Since 1935 it has been owned by the American Dillon family, today operating as Domaine Clarence Dillon.
Style and Character
Haut-Brion is taut, mineral and structured, with a distinctive earthy, smoky, tobacco-edged character and notes of warm gravel. It balances power with finesse and ages effortlessly over decades. The estate also produces a rare and highly sought white wine.
