Corton, Burgundy, France
Domaine Bonneau du Martray
The largest sole owner of Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne in Burgundy, Domaine Bonneau du Martray produces one of the world's great white Burgundies from a single, unbroken Grand Cru holding.
History
Domaine Bonneau du Martray owns 11 hectares of Grand Cru in Corton-Charlemagne, making it the largest single-owner of this vineyard. The estate traces its roots to the monks of Saulieu and has been in continuous cultivation since the 18th century.
After decades under the de la Morinière family, the estate was sold in 2017 to American billionaire John Malone, who has maintained its commitment to minimal-intervention winemaking and biodynamic viticulture.
Style and Character
The Corton-Charlemagne here is produced entirely from Chardonnay grown on the hillside above Pernand-Vergelesses. It is a powerful, mineral and long-lived white with a rich, creamy texture balanced by bright acidity and a stony, almost smoky finish. It requires years to fully open and can age for decades.
The estate also produces a small quantity of red Corton Grand Cru.
INVESTMENT NOTES
Why collectors and investors pay attention
Bonneau du Martray's Corton-Charlemagne occupies a rare position as one of Burgundy's most collectable whites, rivalled only by Montrachet and its satellites in prestige and price trajectory. Its monopole-like scale within a single Grand Cru and its consistent critical recognition drive steady demand from collectors worldwide.
