About Château Smith Haut Lafitte
Château Smith Haut Lafitte sits in Pessac-Léognan, the appellation in the Graves region just south of the city of Bordeaux. The estate has been owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard since 1990, and under their stewardship it has become one of the most admired names in Bordeaux.
Unusually for a top Bordeaux property, Smith Haut Lafitte is equally respected for its red and white wines. That makes it the perfect estate for a dinner that moves from crisp, aromatic whites to structured, age-worthy reds.
The Wine Line-Up
Guests will taste five wines across two flights, chosen to show both sides of the estate and how its wines develop over time.
Blanc
Petit Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 2023
Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 2022
Rouge
Petit Smith Haut Lafitte 2020
Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2016
Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2010
The red flight is a rare opportunity in itself. Tasting the 2020, 2016 and 2010 side by side shows how a great Bordeaux evolves over more than a decade, from youthful energy to the depth and complexity of a mature wine. The 2010 and 2016 vintages are both widely regarded as outstanding years in Bordeaux, making this a particularly special pairing.
Why Vertical Tastings Matter to Collectors
For anyone building a fine wine collection, tasting the same estate across several vintages is one of the best ways to understand quality, ageing potential and value. It shows how a wine’s character changes in the bottle, which vintages are drinking well now, and which deserve more time in the cellar.
This is at the heart of what we do at Cellar Advisor. Whether you collect for pleasure, for investment, or both, evenings like this give you first-hand insight into the wines that make up a strong, investment-grade portfolio.
