Fine Wine Investment: How Cellar Advisor Differs From Funds

Fine wine has become one of the most talked-about alternative assets of the last two decades. Yet the way you invest in it matters as much as the wines you buy. This guide explains who Cellar Advisor is, how our model works, and why it is fundamentally different from putting money into a fine wine investment fund.
The short answer: Cellar Advisor is an independent fine wine investment company with offices in London and Dubai. Unlike a wine investment fund, where you buy units in a pooled vehicle and pay an annual management fee of typically 1% to 2%, our clients own every bottle outright. Wine is held in a named account in their own name at LCB Eton Park, an HMRC-approved bonded warehouse. There is no annual management fee: we charge 2% of sale proceeds, once, when wine we sourced is sold.
Who is Cellar Advisor?
Cellar Advisor is a fine wine portfolio advisory firm serving private investors in more than 30 countries. We are headquartered at 21 Ellis Street, Knightsbridge, London, with a second office in Dubai Silicon Oasis, UAE.
Today we advise over 300 private clients and more than £50 million of fine wine. Our team brings over 50 years of collective expertise and holds WSET qualifications.
We are a member of Liv-ex, the global marketplace for the fine wine trade. That gives our clients trade-level access that most private buyers cannot reach alone, including:
- Allocations from Bordeaux châteaux, Burgundy domaines and Champagne houses before public release
- En primeur buying while wines are still in barrel
- Sourcing across the professional trade at trade prices
- Live market pricing for every valuation and sale
Our services cover portfolio management, bespoke sourcing, en primeur and storage and provenance. Whether the goal is capital growth, building a personal cellar, gifting or inheritance planning, each strategy is written down and reviewed with the client every year.
Why fine wine belongs in a diversified portfolio
Fine wine is a finite, physical asset. Every vintage is limited, and supply of the best bottles falls each year as they are drunk.
It also tends to move independently of the stock market. Based on annual returns from 2014 to 2026, the Liv-ex 1000 index shows a correlation of just 0.12 with the FTSE 100. That makes it a genuine diversifier rather than a substitute for equities.
For UK investors there is a tax angle too. Most fine wine is treated as a wasting asset, so gains are generally exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Always confirm your own position with a tax adviser.
What is a fine wine investment fund?
A fine wine investment fund pools money from many investors and buys wine on their behalf. Investors own units or shares in the fund, not specific bottles. The manager chooses what to buy and sell, and usually charges an annual management fee calculated on assets under management.
Funds can offer convenience, but they come with trade-offs. You cannot point to a case and say it is yours. Your exposure depends on the fund's structure, its manager and, in some cases, its financial position. Exit can also depend on redemption windows or the fund's own lifecycle.
Cellar Advisor vs a fine wine investment fund
The core difference is ownership. A fund gives you a claim on a pooled vehicle. Cellar Advisor gives you title to real, named bottles.
- What you own. A fund gives you units or shares in a pooled vehicle. With Cellar Advisor you own 100% of the underlying wine, outright.
- Where the wine sits. A fund holds wine within its own storage structure. Cellar Advisor clients have their own named account at LCB Eton Park.
- Annual management fee. Funds and fully managed companies typically charge 1% to 2% of assets under management. Cellar Advisor charges none.
- Fee on sale. Funds usually absorb this into the annual charge. Cellar Advisor charges 2% of sale proceeds on wine it sources.
- Storage. Funds usually absorb this into the annual charge. With Cellar Advisor it starts from £12 per 12-bottle case per year, passed through at cost.
- Balance-sheet exposure. A fund's assets are linked to the fund or provider. Cellar Advisor clients' wine is never on our balance sheet.
- Wine selection. A fund manager chooses what to buy. Cellar Advisor selects market-wide and agrees strategy with you first.
- Control. Fund investors are bound by the fund's terms. Cellar Advisor clients can inspect, withdraw or sell individual cases.

What the fee difference means over ten years
An annual percentage fee looks small, but it is charged every year on the whole balance. A one-off fee on sale is charged once.
Take an illustrative £100,000 portfolio of 20 twelve-bottle cases, held for 10 years with no growth assumed:
- Fully managed company, 2% of AUM a year: £18,293 in costs, so you retain £81,707
- Traditional merchant, £15 storage per case and a 10% selling fee: £13,000 in costs, so you retain £87,000
- Cellar Advisor, £12 storage per case and 2% on sale: £4,400 in costs, so you retain £95,600
Under these assumptions a Cellar Advisor client keeps roughly £13,893 more than in the fully managed model. This illustrates charges only; it is not a forecast of returns.
How the Cellar Advisor model works
- Consultation. A named portfolio manager learns your goals, existing holdings and risk profile. The first consultation is free.
- Strategy. We agree a written strategy with you before anything is bought.
- Sourcing. We secure direct allocations from châteaux, domaines and Champagne houses through relationships built over 50 years in the industry.
- Storage. Every case goes into your named account at LCB Eton Park, with its own storage reference.
- Reporting. You can view your holdings at any time through our dedicated client portal, and we produce a detailed portfolio report twice a year.
- Sale. When you decide to sell, we list at live market valuations and take 2% only once the sale settles.
Fees: paid when you sell, not every year
- 0% annual management fee. No AUM charge, setup fee or holding fee.
- 2% on sale of wine we source, deducted from confirmed proceeds when the sale settles. No listing fees and no minimum lot size.
- Around 0.25% a year, all-in, is the typical total cost of holding a portfolio, including storage and insurance.
- Wine transferred in from another merchant costs 2% when the proceeds are reinvested with us, or 7% on a full exit.
Because we are only paid when a trade happens, we have no reason to recommend unnecessary ones. We also hold no stock of our own and are not tied to any producer, so we have nothing to push.
Storage: your name, in bond
LCB Eton Park is an HMRC-approved bonded warehouse. Holding wine "in bond" means it stays outside UK duty and VAT until it is released for consumption.
- Climate-controlled at a consistent 12°C year-round
- Fully insured to current market value
- Held in your name, never pooled or co-mingled with other clients' wine
- Held by an independent, regulated third party, not by Cellar Advisor
- Open to visits by appointment
Unbroken bonded provenance protects value and makes a future sale far simpler. It also means your wine never depends on our financial position.
