Younger Buyers Are Reshaping the Fine Wine Market

Fine Wine Isn’t Just for Older Collectors
There is a persistent perception that fine wine collecting is dominated by an older generation. Recent figures from Christie’s suggest that picture may be changing quickly.
At the auction of Henry Tang’s wine collection in Hong Kong on 10 October, almost half of the buyers were Millennials and Gen Z, according to Christie’s. Even more notably, close to 70% of those younger buyers were purchasing at the auction for the first time.
That is significant.
Fine wine has historically suffered from an image problem among younger consumers: expensive, complicated and perhaps something to become interested in later in life. Yet a new generation increasingly appears comfortable collecting the same blue-chip names that have historically driven the market, including Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Leroy and Henri Jayer.
The auction itself was extremely strong, with all lots sold and 80% exceeding their high estimates. But arguably the more interesting long-term indicator is who was buying them.
As younger collectors enter the market, fine wine’s buyer base is broadening rather than simply ageing with its existing collectors. For a market built around finite supply and wines capable of developing over decades, that demographic shift could prove important.
